The exclusive colour range for Stand Natural Fibres has been developed to reflect New Zealand's unique light and landscape colours. There are currently 174 colours available.
Strand embroidery thread is a versatile yarn spun from a blend of NZ fine wool and NZ kid mohair. It is fully worsted and therefore withstands well the constant rubbing to which embroidery thread is subjected as it is pulled through canvas or fabric. It is soft to handle because of the mohair content but robust because of the wool. The mohair also gives it a sheen which makes it particularly suitable for NZ designs, since the light in the southern hemisphere is brighter than that in the northern part of the world.
The yarn is suited to any crewel embroidery, though it is marginally thicker
than Appletons. It is ideal for petit point which is a traditional type of
needlework stitched on canvas. A single thread of the yarn covers 18# canvas
whether the design is printed on it or not. It will cover 14# canvas (if the
design is printed on it). For 12# or 10# or 7# use 2 or more threads in the
needle. It is also very suitable for using with a variety of threads in modern
interpretive designs.
Although the thread was originally developed for use in embroidery , it has proved to be popular in knitwear (equivalent to a 3 - 4 ply thread) or in weaving.
We are very excited as months of planning have come fruition and the dying, balling and labelling of these very cute 25 gram balls is now complete. We felt that there was an absence of 3 ply yarn available in an interesting range of colours. People have been knitting with this yarn for a while now and have enjoyed it.
