Monarch Butterfly

The Monarch Butterfly is not a native of New Zealand but it has been adopted by Barnardos New Zealand as its logo. (The butterfly changes from egg to chrysalis to insect and in the same way children can be helped into a better way of life).

Green and Gold Bell Frog

This frog species was introduced to New Zealand from Australia around 1870 and is now found in the northern half of the North Island. It is semi-aquatic and lives around ponds and streams. The Maori name for frog is Pepeke.

New Zealand Seahorse

Called Manaia in Maori, the Seahorse is found in bays and harbours around the coast of New Zealand. It uses its tail to cling to seaweed and twigs when it is not hunting for plankton or small crustaceans to eat.

Finished size 10 x 10 cm
NZ$29.95

Archeys Frog

Archey's Frog is native to New Zealand and is found in a small area near Coromandel in the North Island. Native frogs are quite different to introduced species - they have no external eardrum, no webbing between their toes and the pupil of each eye is circular rather than a slit. The male of this species of frog raises the young. The Maori name for frog is Pepeke.
Finished size 10 x 10 cm .
NZ$29.95

New Zealand Weta

This, the common Tree Weta, is called putangatanga by the Maori. Unlike the cave Weta and the giant Weta it shows no traces of wings although it does have its ears just below the knees like a grasshopper. When alarmed the Weta raises its hind legs and produces a rasping noise by moving them up and down. This noise, together with its rather grotesque appearance can be frightening.

The Rata is a common New Zealand native plant and different branches of the family can grow as a vine, a small tree or a forest giant. All have the same bright scarlet and narrow pointed flowers as shown in our design.
Finished size 10 x 10 cm
NZ$29.95

New Zealand Pohutakawa

The Pohutukawa is known as the New Zealand Christmas Tree as it flowers profusely in midsummer. It grows well on the seacoast, mostly in the North Island, and is a striking feature of the landscape at Christmas time. Bees help with the pollination (although the bee shown is not a native!)

Worked in several different stitches on Indian cotton material. Size of stitched area 15cms (6ins) diameter. Design printed on material.
NZ$29.95

Rainbow Trout

Rainbow Trout were introduced to New Zealand in the mid 19 Centuary. They are found predominately in the central North Island lakes and in the head waters of some New Zealand rivers.
Finished size 10 x 10 cm
NZ$29.95
