New Zealand Weta This, the common Tree Weta, is called putangatanga by the Maori. Unlike the cave Weta and the giant Weta it shows no traces of wings although it does have its ears just below the knees like a grasshopper. When alarmed the Weta raises its hind legs and produces a rasping noise by moving them up and down. This noise, together with its rather grotesque appearance can be frightening. The Rata is a common New Zealand native plant and different branches of the family can grow as a vine, a small tree or a forest giant. All have the same bright scarlet and narrow pointed flowers as shown in our design. Design printed in colour on canvas. Chart of design included. |
