Stairway to Heaven This design recalls one of the Tukutuku panels of many Maori Meeting Houses. Called in Maori Poutama it is symbolic of a climb made by a folk hero Tawhaki to receive the three baskets of knowledge from the Gods. Another legend says he was required to climb to the heavens to find his celestial wife. Worked in Cross Stitch and Long Stitch on 18# mono canvas, size of stitched area 10 x 10cms (4ins). Legend says that when these rare and beautiful birds see hunters coming they cry. The Albatross were greatly revered by pre-European Maori.
