The Fox Glacier The Fox Glacier is one of three great rivers of ice which flow down from the highest part of the Southern Alps close to Mount Cook and descend through heavy forest on the western side to within 1,000 feet of sea level. Mount Cook Mount Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand is 3764 metres (12,349 feet) high. Its Maori name Aorangi means Cloud Piercer. It is a popular mountain for climbers although it should only to be attempted by experienced mountaineers. The Giant Buttercup can grow up to 1.5 metres high, has leaves that can be 12 - 30cm across, and white flowers 5 - 7.5cm in diameter. Design printed in colour on canvas. Chart of design included. |

Franz Joseph Glacier This glacier, like the Fox Glacier, flows down the Western slopes of Mount Cook. Julius von Haast, a German geologist who came to New Zealand in 1858 was a scientist with a particular interest in the way that the plains and lakes of the South Island of New Zealand had been formed by the action of glaciers. He named this one after the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Josef because he felt that the grandeur of the scenery demanded a royal name. Design printed in colour on canvas. Wellington Waterfront This view of Wellington at night shows how the city is built round a spectacular harbour. Buildings flow down steep hills to the narrow flat area round the edge of the bay. The Harbour frontage is being developed into a popular recreation area which, as well as cafes and shops, includes boating and canoeing facilities. Te Papa, the recently opened Museum of New Zealand is shown to the left of your picture, and nearby are theatres and other civic amenities. Pamir The Pamir was the last great square-rigged sailing ship to make a commercial voyage around Cape Horn. She made her first voyage to New Zealand in 1938 under Finnish ownership and in 1941 (when German involvement in Finland made that country an enemy state of New Zealand) she was seized as a prize of war when she arrived in Wellington.
